Polyhedron Collider - Board Game News

For a time of year when people traditionally spend money they don't have to give gifts to people they don't like that those people don't need, you'd think Kickstarter would be a little quieter. Quite the opposite it seems as there are more new releases to shelves and on Kickstarter than the UK Christmas Top 40. Thankfully the quality on Kickstarter is marginally higher than the typical output from the Cowell factory of money...er...I mean dreams so tell little Timmy that Santa chose to buy him a pile of coloured cardboard instead of another autotuned synth-fest discussing the benefits of driving fast, wearing "jammin' threads" and generally being socially irresponsible on Snapchat.

Or put more succinctly; it's time for more gaming news! We've got some exciting new kids versions of games, Games Workshop being charitable and some solid news on the Metal Gear Board Game.

GAME ANNOUNCEMENT: MY FIRST CASTLE PANIC

Polyhedron Collider - Board Game News

Fireside Games are releasing a kids version of the popular and simple co-op game about defending a castle from a horde of orcs, goblins and ogres.  This game is aimed at gamers as young as 4.

With charming artwork from Cam Kendell, the game is of the same premise but players will now have simple coloured coded shapes that they need to match to rampaging monsters.  This will be hitting shelves in March 2019.

GAME ANNOUNCEMENT: EXIT KIDS CODEBREAKER

Polyhedron Collider - Board Game News

Currently only available in Germany from publisher KOSMOS, EXIT KIDS is exactly what it sounds like, and escape-room style game aimed at youngsters from 7 upwards.  Featuring a giant plastic code-lock, a UV lamp, a red filter and even a small mirror to help the budding detectives break up to 60 different puzzles.

No details about an English language version of the game yet, but there is just one more thing:

WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU GIVE A CHILD A UV LAMP?!

GAME ANNOUNCEMENT: MEDIUM

Polyhedron Collider - Board Game News

A new party game from Greater Than Games will task players to form psychic connections as they try to align their thoughts to link cards drawn from each other's hand.

Its a word game of mind reading, word guessing and high fives that will be coming straight to retail in the second half of 2019.

EXPANSION ANNOUNCEMENT: RESIDENT EVIL 2

Polyhedron Collider - Board Game News

Two expansions will quickly follow the official release of Resident Evil 2 on the 25th of January.  The first, in fact, will be on the same day.

The B-Files adds new scenarios, new enemies, new miniatures and all the other guff and will set you back a further 50 odd quid.  A month later you can drop another £50 on Survival Horror, an expansion that allows Player Vs. Player.

JUST RELEASED: WARLORDS OF EREHWON

Polyhedron Collider - Board Game News

A new miniature wargame, Warlords of Erehwon, from designer Rick Priestly is available for preorder from the Warlords website.  That's right, the same Rick Priestly who co-designed Warhammer, Warhammer 40K, Necromunda, Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game, Black Powder and Bolt Action.  That Rick Priestly.

Sitting somewhere between a skirmish game and a wargame, WoE was specifically designed to be fast-paced and exciting combat, all set in a world drawn from fantasy, folklore and myth.

HANDIWORK GAMES

Polyhedron Collider - Board Game News

A new tabletop game company has emerged, based in Scotland and headed up by former Cubicle 7 Creative Director, Jon Hodgson.  They've opened their website with two new setting books for Dungeons and Drgaons 5th edition, Hellenistika and Beowulf.

Alexander the Great is dead, and in the world he left behind, new heroes emerge.  You are one of these heroes, so live fast, love well, and leave a good-looking mosaic! The second is the classic tale of the Scandinavian hero and the cruel monster Grendel.  This is another D&D 5E setting for two players.

Both games are coming in 2019, you can sign up for notifications from the publisher on their website.

JUST RELEASED: GHOSTBUSTERS THE CARD GAME

Polyhedron Collider - Board Game News

I’m one of those people who consider the Ghostbuster movies to be Christmas movies, so a charmingly cartooney Ghostbusters card game that will hopefully have loads of movie quotes will go down a treat over the Christmas holidays in my house.  Thanks to Renegade Games, I can now do just that.

Sticking with Renegade Games, another release is Passing through Petra.  Petra is, of course where Indie goes to pick up the Holy Grail, you know the one, with the building carved into the rock.  This game has players trading in this ancient bustling centre of commerce with a puzzling economic engine!

JUST RELEASED: BATTLESTAR GALACTICA: STARSHIP BATTLES

Polyhedron Collider - Board Game News

Grab your gun and bring in the cat! Last week (on my birthday no less) Ares games released Battlestar Galactica: Starships Battles.  Here players will play as either Colonial or Cylon spaceships as you recreate some of your favourite dogfights from either version of the amaze-balls TV show.

The game system  is similar to that of Wings of Glory and Sails of Glory but with a few new twists.  It also comes with pre-assembled, pre-painted minis that look pretty decent.  As with games of this ilk, the base set comes with the bare essentials of what you need to get playing, with extra ships and vessels coming as additional purchases.

JUST RELEASED: K’UH NAH

Polyhedron Collider - Board Game News

Matata.  Nope, this isn’t a game about one of the greatest Disney songs of all time - If you’re even thinking “Let It Go” you need to go and have a long hard look in the mirror and have some stern words with yourself.

This game is all about building Mayan pyramids, which seems like a hot theme right now, but K’uh Nah appears to be a light, push your luck type of game where players will be either collecting or passing on central numbered-blocks to build up the edifices but strictly in descending order.

RELICS & RARITIES

In February 2019 a new and unique D&D campaign will begin on the Geek & Sundry Twitch channel Alpha.  Relic & Rarities is the brainchild of Dungeon Master Deborah Ann Woll, who you might recognise from Netflix's Daredevil and True Blood.

The campaign has been described as "part procedural", with characters investigating a murder in a world fully created by Woll.  The teaser video hints that this series will be more than the usual Geek & Sundry affair, with an elaborate set constructed for filming and real-world props being used in the game.

ANGELS OF DEATH

In the grim darkness of the future, there is only war...which you'll soon be able to experience as a brand new animated series.  Warhammer TV has pulled its finger out, listened to fans and will soon be releasing an animated series following the plights and battles of a band of Blood Angel Space Marines.

Fans of Warhammer 40k might know about the well-received fan-made series based upon the Black Library novel Helsreach, well the guys behind that gem are the ones bringing you Angels of Death with some well know Black Library names penning the screenplays.

Due out sometime in 2019, we'll keep you posted when we know dates and times.

BOARD GAME BOYCOTT

Boycott Gary Con.

That’s the message from Stacy Dellorfano, the CEO of the ConTessa Foundation.  Why?  Because Bill Webb has been invited as a special guest.  Now, let's get some of the formalities out of the way,

Gary Con is an RPG convention that celebrates D&D creator, Gary Gygax.  The ConTessa Foundation was set up to support women in gaming  And finally, Bill Webb, at PaizoCon in 2017 sexually harassed another attendee.

Gary Con will be held on March 7th in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin and as yet, Bill Webb is still on the guest list.

MINIATURE MUNCHKIN

Polyhedron Collider - Board Game News

Munchkin is coming to Kickstarter, but it’s not Munchkin as you know it.  This time it has miniatures, a board and the names Eric E. Lang and Andrea Chiarvesio attached.  That’s right, its CMON Munchkin Dungeon. This version will still have all the dick moves that you love about Munchkin, but now with added plastic and cardboard.

Expect this to come to Kickstarter early 2019.

TECHNOIR

Polyhedron Collider - Board Game News

Back in June 2011, Jeremy Keller launched Technoir on Kickstarter, and a month later it was 970% funded. It’s a cyber-noir RPG that boasted a “new mechanical approach and a revolutionary plot-mapping approach to improvised scenario design”.  Unfortunately, not all the stretch goals were realised, until now, that is.

Dream Machine Productions has now acquired Technoir and has already been preparing its re-release with a revised core rulebook, new website for the game and a host of other supplements.  Most importantly, for those 600 plus backers, all those stretch goals that never happened, now are.

NEVERMORE GREATER

Greater Than Games (Sentinels of the Multiverse, Spirit Island) has, after months of talks, acquired Nevermore Games (Chicken Caesar, Mars Needs Mechanics).  Nevermore Games will be fully supported as they deliver their most recent Kickstarter, Dark Dealings: Dwarven Delve.  Bryan Fischer, founder of Nevermore will continue to design and illustrate games for other publishers.

GAMES WORKSHOP AID

Polyhedron Collider - Board Game News

Earlier this year a fire raged through California, destroying homes and lives.  As you would expect with such a large scale disaster many different communities were affected by this loss, the wargamers, on top of losing their homes and other worldly possessions also lost their armies.

Spearheaded by the Independent Characters podcast crew, the Warhammer Community got together and started raising money and providing support for those gamers.  When Games Workshop found out about this effort, they too got involved pledging to provide a new army for each of those affected by the fires.

Not only that, but during January on their Twitch channel, there will be a “Hang Out and Paint” charity event to help raise money for the wider relief effort and also provide those replacement armies with fully painted heroes done by the Warhammer Painting Studio itself.

You too can get involved with the event here

NO MORE VERY IMPORTANT GAMERS

Polyhedron Collider - Board Game News

GenCon has removed the VIG (Very Important Gamer) pass for GenCon 2019.  This pass previously allowed holders to enter the halls 1 hour before the general masses on the opening Thursday.

So far, we don’t know why they’ve done this, but they better have a bloody good reason!

METAL GEAR SOLID- MORE NEWS

Polyhedron Collider - Board Game News

Previously on the News Collider, we told you about the Metal Gear Solid board game.  Well, as I promised then, we have more news for you.  No shocker that a game from IDW will have miniatures, but Metal Gear Solid the Board Game will have miniatures.  It will be a co-op game following the story of the first video game.

The game will boast a dynamic A.I system and a sandbox mode allowing players to complete their objectives in multiple ways.  We also know that it will debut at E3 where media will be able to book into play it, as of yet there is no sign of it coming to any of the UK conventions.

If, like me, you’re upset by this please begin badgering IDW here

WINNING ROLL

Last month, Larry Enros Jr won the District 1 seat for the Byron-Bethany Irrigation Board by rolling a natural 20 in the nailbiting decider.  He was up against the incumbent, Milan “Pete” Petrovich, where each received 51 votes during the usual voting campaign.  However, as per Californian state law, in the event of a tie, the final result will be decided upon by the drawing of lots, or other such random contests.

A quick whip around the office turned up someones D20 (that they actually use in their D&D campaign).  The two contestants duked it out over three rolls, with the highest cumulative score being declared the victor.  After two rolls each, they were 31 to 32 and then Enros rolls a nat 20 to cinch it.

KICKSTARTER HIGHLIGHTS:

Stonehenge and the Sun - a dexterity game where you’ll build up the famous British landmark and then try NOT to knock it down with a wrecking ball.  Seriously.  This looks great, go check it out.

Robogram - Robogram is a game designed to introduce basic computer coding while taking opponents in epic cyber battles, its already fully funded with only 5 days left.

Folded Space - The latest campaign adds 15 new inserts to further expand our range and organise even more of your board game collection!
