Odyssey of the Dragonlords

Kickstarter Highlights - Odyssey of the Dragonlords

Campaign Page
Since we found out about this project we’ve been a little bit excited about it here at Collider Towers.  Part of the reason for this excitement is because we’re all on a big RPG binge currently (you should check out our weekly live D&D stream on Twitch or later on Youtube #JustSayin), but the main reason is the team that are behind this project.

Odyssey of the Dragonlords is a 5th edition adventure inspired by Greek myth written by Arcanum World, a company founded by ex-BioWare lead designers James Ohlen and Jesse Sky (Neverwinter Nights, Dragon Age: Origins, Baldurs Gate I & II, Knights of the Old Republic and Star Wars: The Old Republic) and Drew Karpyshyn, BioWare senior writer on Mass Effect I & II and Knights of the Old Republic.  So, a pretty high caliber creative team I’m sure you’ll agree.

The campaign funded in less than 24 hours and the with digital pledge version from $25 I think this is a must punt game.  If you need a little more convincing you can even download the Players Guide from Modiphius.net or DriveThruRPG or check out Drew Karpyshyn’s short story, Dragonlord’s Wager, set 500 years prior to the adventure.

Oceans - A stand alone game in the Evolution series

Kickstarter Highlights - Oceans

Campaign Page
Much like Evolution, Oceans challenges players to create and evolve an entire species across millions of years.  In this stand alone game, as the title suggests you’ll be doing so in a vast and perilous underwater world.

Each species is defined by its population and its traits and throughout the game your species lose and gain these depending on what and how much it can eat.  Because a species can be built from any combination of traits there are thousands of possible species all of which will interact and impact the ecosystem of each game.

The art is typically stunning in this game and with very slick and simple rules you can be exploring the ocean depths with your fantastic creations in no time.  If you want a taste of this game you can download Evolution: The video game for free from the iTunes or Google Play

Bloodborne: The Board Game

Kickstarter Highlights - Bloodborne The Board Game

Campaign Page [Campaign isn't live at time of posting]
“We are born of the blood, made men by the blood, undone by the blood. Our eyes are yet to open... Fear the old blood.”

The Tripadvisor reviews for Yarnham must be something to behold “I visited the old town of Yarnham on the night of the full moon, and although I appreciate the stunning architecture I am disappointed by the amenities and the reception I received. The town seemed to be in the middle of a local festivity, where townsfolk walk the streets carrying torches and pitchforks on the hunt for beasts.  They were very hostile towards me. I thought I may stumble across some excitable youth dressed in a colourful beast costume, I was in fact attacked by a giant werewolf.  The accommodation did, however, fair slightly better as the Hunters Dream was hosted by a rather lovely talking doll. 3 stars”.

Bloodborne the board game, based on the hugely successful Playstation Game, is coming from CMON this week, and as you can tell I am rather familiar with its dark story. Take on the role of a hunter as you take down the townsfolk and beasts of all shapes and sizes, using your trick weapons; swords, canes and hammers that can changed on the fly into two completely different weapons.

CMON have teased some game play information, showing us that Bloodborne will be about careful resource management and promises a dungeon crawler without any dice and the tactical option to switch your trick weapon for more play styles, even in the middle of a fight.

Of course it being CMON we know the miniatures are going to be beautiful, lets just hope there is some decent game play to back it up.

The Dungeon - Modular Battle Map Books

Kickstarter Highlights - The Dungeon

Campaign Page
Loke Battle Mats (which Steve has previously reviewed here) have now produced a pair of interconnected, modular battle mat books.  Each book is 12’ X 12’ and with the exception of the front and back covers each of the 30 pages (with more included as Stretch Goals) forms part of a dungeon.

The book scan be used together in any orientation (creating up to a 2” X 2” playing space!) to create different dungeons, and, just as with their previous Battle book the ring bound spine means it sits perfectly flat on the table with laminated pages ready for dry erase markers to add any other details.

At just £25 with delivery scheduled for this summer, this pair of books will make a great addition to any role play game kit!

Plague Inc: Armageddon

Kickstarter Highlights - Plague Inc Armageddon

Campaign Page
There is little doubt you’ve heard of Plague Inc, the ultimate mobile game for the “Thinking Seat” - a game where players attempt to wipe out all of humanity as a disease.  In 2016 the critically acclaimed game came to tabletops with after a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign.  The board game was a fantastic implementation of the mobile game, pitting players against each other in a bid to be more virulent, more deadly and to basically be betting at killing humans than everyone else.  As a fan of the mobile version there was clearly a lot of scope for an expansion (the base game includes Bacteria and Virus types of disease).  Finally, it’s here.

Armageddon adds two new disease types, Fungi and Bioweapons a new Genetic Modification mechanic, new Country cards to reflect the current and ever changing geopolitical landscape (Yup, that means Brexit Britain and an Isolationist U.S.A) more event and trait cards and components for an extra player.

For £42 you can get the original game, plus the expansion (well inside punt territory) or pick up the expansion for £19 - in my books this it Kickstarter pledges done right, it’s a significant discount to the MSRP and you’ll get Kickstarter Exclusives.

CoreBall: The Zero-G Sport

Kickstarter Highlights - Core Ball

Campaign Page
In many ways CoreBall is to FAITH: The Sci-Fi RPG as Bloodbowl is to Warhammer with a fe important exceptions.

  • Its far, far cheaper
  • It supports up to 4 players at once
  • It only takes 40 mins to play the entire game

Ok, it’s actually a completely different game really, but the idea is similar

It’s a sports game about building combos with your players to put the ball in a specific location and along the way you can beat the hell out of your opponents.  The most interesting aspect of this game is the board, since you are playing this game in space, specifically in an asteroid field you ‘ll have to worry about things like, well, asteroids, and gravity, and momentum.  This is done by an ever changing board, where a new “circuit field” is slipped under the transparent plastic “floating board” each round - this simulates the ever changing space in which the game is played, introducing new dangers, new gravity fields etc.

The game also features some incredible miniatures (by Big Child Creatives - the folks behind the minis for FAITH, Zomicide, A Song of Fire and Ice amongst many others)

*I know, technically Oceans isn’t about Dinosaurs but we are talking about millions of years of evolution, so prehistoric animals, which is pretty similar.  Well, near enough

**I don’t know anything about Bloodbourne other than Steve keep stalking about it.  Does it have demons in it?  I simply don’t know, probably.
