Unlikely and unwelcome teams ups, award nominations and award winners, record breakers, birthday presents and long overdue TV show adaptations. This is what awaits you in this week’s News Collider, the best, and strangest tid bits of board gaming news from around the internet
Spiel de Jahres Winners
The winners of the 2019 Spiel de Jahres have been announced with Just One, from Repos Productions taking home the Game of the Year award and Wingspan, from Stonemaier Games picking up the Connoisseurs Game of the Year Award. Last month Valley of the Vikings from HABA was announced as the Children’s Game of the Year 2019.
On a related note, the Kinderspiel des Jahres has recently undergone some changes to its jury ahead of the 2020 nominations, and for the first time the advisory board for the award has been publicly advertised with nearly fifty people applying for the three available advisory positions.
Dragon Ball Z from IDW and CMON
CMON and IDW are teaming up! Merging the licensing prowess and the creative partnerships of IDW with the game design and miniature muscle power of CMON, these two companies are working on a Dragonball Z board game that will hit table tops some time in 2020.
Personally, I don’t give a monkey’s about a Dragonball Z game, but what does pique my interest is these two large and very well established companies working together on a design and what this venture could lead to over the next few months or years…let's see if anything comes of it.
Fifth Edition Turns Five (and you get a present)
In celebration of turning five years old, Wizards of the Coast announced this past weekend at ComicCon that they will be releasing Tyranny of Dragons in October!
I know, they’ve already done this. Tyranny of Dragons was the first adventure released with the Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition rules. However, this re-release is far from just...well, a re-release. It will feature both parts of the adventure, Hoard of the Dragon Queen and the The Rise of Tiamat in one hardback volume with new art from Hydro74.
But wait! There’s more.
Wizards of the Coast have taken on board player feedback from the original adventure and have smoothed out some of the rougher edges. There’s also a host of player and dungeon master materials, and a load of concept art to gaze at.
So here’s the question, given that Andy is a compulsive completionist, but already owns both parts of this adventure, will he or won’t he buy this when it hit shelves on 22nd October?
(I will - Andy)
Introducing the Funkoverse
Previously on the News Collider we told you about the acquisition by Funko of the design company behind Villainous and Bob Ross: the Art of Chill, Forrest-Pruzan Creative. Now, it is time to tell you about the games Funko will be releasing.
Wave one consists of six titles from licenses as diverse as Harry Potter, DC, Rick & Morty and...the Golden Girls.
Yup. A Golden Girls strategy board game. I repeat, a "Strategy board game".
What’s...more interesting is that these can be played as a stand alone game, or mixed and matched to create a pop culture mega board game brawl. Finally, a way to answer the question of who would win a fight between Voldermort, Batman and Blanche Devereaux.
CMON’s Teburu Tabletop Gaming Console
CMON have partnered with Italian game developers Xplored (you know, Xplored, the company behind Gormiti, Final Goal and RUNIMALZ) to bring you a luxury and almost completely unnecessary video game tabletop game hybrid solution, Teburu.
With sensors in the base of each mini and batteries in your dice you’ll move stuff around on the specially designed table top board and when you move a miniature there will be contextual sound effects.
But wait! There’s more.
No need for player boards and cards and the such like, with Teburu, you can use your phone to help play board games!
Coming to Kickstarter in 2020 and costing probably an arm and a leg, it's the tabletop gaming peripheral you never wanted!
Kickstarters Record Breaking First Half
The first half of 2019 has seen more money raised on Kickstarter’s Tabletop gaming than in any of the crowd funding platform’s previous ten years. $80.47 million was raised between January to June 2019 against $79.87 million over the same period of 2018...which is only 0.75% but its still up.
The number of successful projects was also up, with 69% of the 1,926 projects launched making the first half of 2019 the most successful period for tabletop games on the platform.
2019 Diana Jones Excellence in Gaming Award Nominees
The Diana Jones Excellence in Gaming Award is a bit different from other awards in the board gaming industry in that it only gives out one award and it can be awarded to an individual, a company, a movement, an event and of course, a game. Previous winners include GenCon, Eric M. Lang, and Actual Play (which, one could argue Polyhedron Collider have been a part of, with our weekly Twitch streams of our Dungeons & Dragons campaigns).
This year, the nominees are:
The Mind
Star Crossed RPG
The winner will be announced shortly before GenCon in Indianapolis on Friday 31st July.
Games Workshop’s Eisenhorn Live Action TV Show
Most perturbatory. I think not! This is bloody fantastic news. A live-action series based on the character of Gregor Eisenhorn, Inquisitor of the Imperial Throne from the Games Workshop’s Black Library trilogy by Dan Abnett. The show, still very early in “the works” is being executively produced by Frank Spotnitz whose name you may recognise from shows like ‘The X-Files’ and 'The Man in the High Castle'.
No broadcaster, platform nor actors are attached to the project as yet but with a huge Warhammer 40K fan base and an absence of anything like the rich Grim Dark future of the 41st millennium on TV it won’t be long until there is more news (which you’ll find here).
