This week’s board game News Collider is a big one, records have been broken, milestones reached, acquisitions completed, new shiny boardgames announced, it is quite simply everything a board game needs to stay up to date with the latest happenings in and around the tabletop community.
Kickstarter Board Games in Growth Shocker
The Shining Boardgame
Designed by Prospero Hall (the folks behind Horrified, Jaws, Villainous and more) have created a game based on the Stephen King book and Stanley Kubrick classic horror film, The Shining.
Snowed in Overlook Hotel, this co-op game will have you searching the rooms looking for a means to escape and a way to stay sane...however, not everyone starts the game sane, as one player has already succumbed to the nightmarish thoughts being pummeled into their heads by the building itself!!!
We don't usually do 'new games' in the News Collider but the prestige of Prospero Hall and Stephen King I think made it worthwhile. The fact that it's being published by Mixlore (Nosedive) makes it questionable…
Unearthed Arcana is still being updated
(something is coming)
Since August 2019 D&D’s Unearthed Arcana https://dnd.wizards.com/articles/unearthed-arcana has been continually updated. The new public playtest material has mainly been new subclasses (there are 19 new subclasses to try out currently) and there’s also a Class Feature Variant to try too.
To be honest, we’ve long suspected that a new player supplement was on its way, and the Explorer’s Guide to Wildemount was a (very pleasant) surprise, but a surprise nonetheless. Also in August last year, Kate Welch announced that a new supplement to be released in 2020 would feature a collection of shorter adventures from a collection of writers that will include Marisha Ray and Deborah Ann Woll.
Only time will tell on this one, but at Collider Towers we are expecting another announcement in the next few months about a supplement with brand new adventures, new player options and the usual new spells, treasure and monsters. In short, a new supplement for every type of D&D player.
Mech Vs Minions Publisher announces next game
Riot Games, the video game publisher who three years ago brought us the stunning and exceedingly well-produced Mech Vs Minions are returning to the tabletop space. Their next game, Tellstones: King’s Gambit will be a completely different game. Shorter, faster, and competitive, King’s Gambit is a bluffing game with perfect information (which sounds different already) set in their fantasy world of Runeterra,
The Adventure Zone Animated TV Show
The popular D&D podcast, The Adventure Zone has been signed to NBC’s up-and-coming streaming service Peacock. The Adventure zone follows the brother’s Justin, Travis, and Griffin McElroy and their father, Clint, as the DM in a comedy roleplaying game that is loosely Dungeons & Dragons 5E.
The show has also seen success as a graphic novel: The Adventure Zone: Here There Be Gerblins became the first graphic novel ever to top the New York Time’s best-selling trade fiction list shortly after its release in 2018.
Asmodee Acquires Repos Productions
The publisher behind the 2019 Spiel des Jahres, Just One, the incredible (and best) two-player game (ever) 7 Wonders Duel and the multiplayer original 7 Wonders has fallen to the mighty Asmodee. I say fall, but being part of the world’s second-largest games company (behind Hasbro) isn’t really a “fall”.
The catalogue of 55 games produced in the company's 16-year history will now all benefit from Asmodee’s huge reach, with remaining founder, Thomas Provoost, taking his seat as Studio Coordinator while Cédrick Caumont steps away from Repos Productions to develop a new independent studio, Captain Games that will combine game publishing with boardgame consulting.
